Callanish, Scotland

I hope that the snow in this image has a similar affect on you as it has on me. The light dusting conveys for me a feeling of tranquility, pervading silence and solemnity as though the upright stones offer to guard over this sacred ground.

Indeed they are the Callanish standing stones on the remote windswept island of Lewis on the Outer Herbrides of Scotland. I arrived on a blustery November day with the icy winds off Loch Roag as my only welcome. The age of the stones are in dispute, with the most recent estimate placing it as early as 3400 BC.

This ancient holy place most likely had a special significance in virtually every aspect of the lives of those in the surrounding communities, serving as a meeting place, a burial ground, a place of worship, and for all the ceremonies pertaining to their physical, spiritual, and social needs. It may also have been a megalithic calendar, perhaps eight centuries earlier than Stonehenge. These standing stones could have provided the date; measured the seasons; told people when to plant, when to reap; and also indicated special celestial events - particularly associated with the moon. I wonder what direction the stones have for you right now? Do they suggest anything for your calendar?

Inner landscapes can leave you with a particular feeling, a way of connection, or a sense of reassurance, or you may, by dwelling on a particular image, get an insight or a renewed sense of purpose. Whatever happens for you, realize that your experience is totally unique and that whatever comes is valid for you. I hope your visit today to Callanish is a rich and rewarding experience.
