One of the best examples of how photography has helped me to see differently is my photograph entitled "Earth From Space". One day when I was out photographing the sunset on a flat treeless piece of prairie, I decided to look at the sky through my 16 mm fisheye lens. This lens makes straight lines near the edge of the frame look curved. Later, I turned the image upside down -- and the sky became the Earth, and the earth became the black sky! Thus the title, since the resulting image appears to be a view of our planet from a great distance away.
This picture is a classic example of how the way we look at something can profoundly influence what we see. It challenges us to think about our fixed perceptions and how they may limit us from seeing and experience our world differently. How might our experiences change if we walked on our hands, and viewed everything upside down? And who's to say which way is the right way?
I realize now that there are literally hundreds of ways of seeing. If we had all of these methods of seeing differently available to us, what flexible and creative beings we would become!

My most profound example of really learning to see is my Pool of Possibilities. Check out my e-calendar where I will show you 365 different ways of seeing the same space, and what that means to me on a daily basis.
As a photographer, the camera has been my passport on this journey to Seeing With New Eyes. The articles in this section are examples of my experiences. Sign up to my free e-zine to experience your own journey. I'll introduce different ways of seeing and practical exercises every month. No camera required.
